Heritage

Last Saturday I took my son to the rifle range to teach him how to shoot a gun. So we loaded up the truck with 3 rifles, a bunch of ammo and binoculars and head to the range. He seemed to like shooting the .22 rifle and was kind of intimidated by the .270 an .223 that I was sighting in. I was glad to see his enthusiasm for shooting. It has gotten me more interested in shooting now that I know he likes it.

I recently decided to take my black-powder pistol the next time we go shooting. I bought a old western style holster and a 2 inch leather belt for it. When I bought the belt I had a choice of buying either a belt with a "U.S." civil war buckle or a "C.S." civil war buckle. I opted for the Confederate buckle because I was born and raised in North Carolina. When I showed my son the buckle, he asked me what the "CS" meant. I explained to him that it meant "Confederate States" and gave him a brief explanation of the civil war and how the South seceded from the union. He then asked me if the Confederacy were the ones that had the flag like the one on the top of "the General Lee" from "The Dukes of Hazard". I told him that that was the same one. He then asked me why people hate that flag so much.

I can only assume that my son thought that most people hate the confederate flag based on what he sees on TV. Once again the liberal media has misled and brain-washed another sole. Thankfully, I was there to straighten my boy out. I had to explain to him that the Union Jack is the flag off the Confederacy and historically a very important part of the South. It is part of Southern heritage. It is unfortunate that some bigoted groups have adopted the flag as their own, but it does not change the true heritage of the flag and what it symbolizes. It is a symbol of Southern heritage.

That is great. I am getting ready to have a child in the next few weeks and when he/she gets older I would like to take them shooting as well.

And I would have picked the CS belt as well since I am a 4th generation Texan

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !!!!

Merry Christmas Texan! I'm getting my first black powder rifle for Christmas (TC Omega). Can't wait to get my hands on it and shoot it. I'd love to drop a trophy buck with it.

Hey Scott, I was born and raised in Shelby and still call it my home. Yet for some reason I do not consider the Confederate Flag part of my heritage. And please don’t call me ignorant, I am well aware of American history. And I’m well aware of my past too. I’m the 4th generation of my family to live in Shelby. Like you father probably did to you, my father taught me about my family, home, and country. However, he did not teach me the Confederate Flag was part of my heritage. Sure, its part of the South’s history, but it’s not part of my heritage. I mean if you’re proud of the fact that this region of the country (nearly 150 years ago) based its entire economic system on the oppression of a group of people based on the color of the skin, then go ahead. But I know the Civil War was fought over economics, not slavery. That flag is not part of our heritage, unless you feel that wanting to rip this country apart for purely economic reasons is part of your heritage. And that’s your right Scott. You can do that. Because we’re still the UNITED States of America.
